With only ten days left until Eid al-Fitr, it’s time to plan your celebrations for the end of Ramadan.
In the United Kingdom, Eid al-Fitr 2025 is expected to take place on the evening of Sunday 30 March or Monday 31 March, depending on the sighting of the moon.
Eid al-Fitr falls on the first day of Shawwal, which is the tenth month of the Islamic calendar. It marks the end of Ramadan, which is the ninth month of the calendar.
The Islamic lunar calendar differs in length from the Gregorian calendar used internationally. This therefore means that the Gregorian date of Muslim holidays changes slightly from year to year, falling around 11 days earlier every year.
While Eid al-Fitr, is an important celebration for Muslims, no bank holidays are linked with this event in the UK. But since the date changes every year, Eid al-Fitr often falls on other UK holidays, for example this year it may coincide with Mother’s Day.
Any Islamic-run businesses and organisations in the UK may change their opening hours during Eid, and there may be traffic around mosques and Eid al-Fitr 2025 celebrations.
Roughly 2.8 million Muslims reside in the UK, making up around 4.8% of the country’s population. Islam is the second largest religion in the UK, after Christianity. The largest of the Muslim communities is in London, while other cities such as: Bradford, Blackburn, Birmingham, Dewsbury and Luton also have large Muslim populations.
If you live near a Muslim community in the UK during Eid, you will probably hear them wishing each other ‘Eid Mubarak’. This translates as ‘Blessed Eid’ or ‘Happy Eid’, and it’s a sign of respect to say it to your Muslim friends or co-workers.
