The exhibition includes sculptures, sketches and story boards.

What’s this? There’s colour everywhere. What’s this? There’s white things in the air. No, you’re not dreaming, The World of Tim Burton is coming to the Design Museum. Located in Kensington, the exhibition runs from 24 October 2024 to 21 April 2025.

The World of Tim Burton showcases the work of the film director, Tim Burton. Hailing from California, United States, he is famous for his gothic, quirky and off-kilter films. Combining dark comedy and the grotesque, his stories follow endearing misfits, which are often celebrated at Halloween.

So many of Tim's film concepts sound like they shouldn't work, but they do. His hit films include Beetlejuice, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Edward Scissorhands, Frankenweenie, and Sleepy Hollow. He has frequently worked with Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, and Winona Ryder. Over his career, he has won an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award and been nominated for two Academy Awards.

The World of Tim Burton invites guests into his universe and his unique aesthetic. The collection draws from Tim’s personal archive, which spans his childhood to the present day. It’s not just about film, as the exhibition includes artwork across different mediums and formats.

Discover his approach as an illustrator, painter, photographer and author, and how key collaborations shape his world. For example, the character of Edward Scissorhands came from a drawing he made when he was in high school. The collection includes drawings, paintings, photographs, sketchbooks, props, sculptural installations, storyboards and set designs.

The World of Tim Burton has toured the world, and the previous locations include Torino, Italy; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Taipei, Taiwan; Seoul, South Korea; and Mexico City, Mexico.
