Insane Asylum Seekers comes to the Bush Theatre in London.

The play Insane Asylum Seekers is coming to the Bush Theatre in Shepherd’s Bush, London. Running from 8 May to 7 June 2025, it will showcase the lives of British Iraqi refugees. Tickets are on sale now, and here’s what to expect.

Insane Asylum Seekers delves into the lived experience of British Iraqi refugees, and the complexities of the Arab diaspora in the United Kingdom. The production promises to entertain and move its audience, while addressing politically topical and culturally relevant themes.

“At 27, my dad had escaped multiple bloodthirsty dictatorships. I’m 27, I had a panic attack watching the final episode of Succession,” says the 27-year-old Iraqi character, Laith, who is keeping a secret that is finally catching up with him. After observing his family’s suspicious and erratic behaviour, he concludes that his parents’ escape from Iraq 30 years ago is likely the catalyst for the mess he finds himself in today.

Insane Asylum Seekers is written by Laith Elzubaidi, and directed by Olivier Award Nominee, Emily Ling Williams. Emily has previously directed A Playlist for the Revolution, The Full Works and The Key Workers Cycle.

Laith is played by the British Iraqi Belgian actor Tommy Sim’aan. His theatre credits include the Royal Shakespeare Company’s The Tempest, and Starcrossed for which he was nominated for Best Performer in a Play at The Stage Debut Awards 2022. Plus, his onscreen credits include Doctors, The Midwich Cuckoos and Vigil.

Tickets start from £10. Check in with FACT for the best things to do in London.
