The Hunger Games is making its way from the screen to the stage. This marks the first time that the blockbuster film franchise has been adapted for the theatre. Running from 20 October, The Hunger Games: On Stage will take place at the new venue, Troubadour Canary Wharf Theatre.
The playwright, Conor McPherson, has adapted the story from Suzanne Collins’ books and Lionsgate’s films. The team includes director Matthew Dunster and choreographer Charlotte Broom, who have worked together at Shakespeare’s Globe and Regent’s Park Open Air theatre. The show aims to be an exciting experience, and transport the audience into the heart of the games.
Matthew explained said: “Conor lifts the detail and power from the book and film and has provided us with the kind of taut and dangerous play he is renowned for. He honours the young voice of Katniss Everdeen and puts her front and centre.
“We’ve been workshopping the play for over a year with our world-class creative team, carefully honing our theatrical vocabulary because we want to bring audiences something as impactful and edgy as Suzanne Collins’ novel and as passionate and exciting as the movie. But we are going to do it in our own way: in the theatre. We want our Hunger Games to be uniquely, thrillingly theatrical.”

In 2012, the first The Hunger Games film was released. The stars included Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth and Woody Harrelson. Based on the books, it follows a dystopian world where people compete in a televised event to fight until the death – and until one remains.
The Hunger Games: On Stage pre-sale tickets are available from 25 March. General tickets are available from 27 March.
