Now in its third year, the display will light up Coventry Street.
Ramadan Lights are back, and brighter than ever. Now in its third year, Coventry Street in Piccadilly Circus will be lit up for Ramadan from 5pm to 5am every day, from 28 February 28 until 6 April.
With over 30,000 bulbs lining the West End, the free lights display will include Islamic geometric inspired patterns and celestial symbols relating to Ramadan. As the Holy Month comes to a close, the Happy Ramadan message will then change to Happy Eid to celebrate the holiday.
The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, a practising Muslim himself, will switch on the annual light display welcoming people of all backgrounds to visit and reflect. The annual celebration is an important reminder of London’s multiculturalism, diversity and community, uniting citizens together under the warm display.
This year, the display will be further complemented by experiences. An iftar food trail called Ramadan Delights includes a community lantern project, and a Spread The Light interactive light installation will take place in Leicester Square.
The lights are organised and funded by the Aziz Foundation, a charity that offers scholarships, internships and mentorships to British Muslim students. Rahima Aziz, a trustee at the Aziz Foundation, said: "We are proud to continue this world-leading tradition for a third year, celebrating London's rich diversity and the spirit of Ramadan."
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, and is a period of fasting, prayer and reflection. Observed by Muslims internationally, the fast starts every day at dawn and ends at sunset, including both food and drink. It lasts for 29 to 30 days, and is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, making it a highly spiritual period for the community.
The end of Ramadan is marked by Eid, which means ‘festival’, in which Muslims gather together to celebrate gratitude and family.
Ramadan Kareem.
